Kypros tekee ikätestejä turvapaikanhakijoille, jotka väittävät olevansa alaikäisiä. 2015-2018 testatuista 105 turvapaikanhakijasta 56% osoittautuivat aikuisiksi.
Nyt maan sisäministeriö aikoo nopeuttaa ikätestaamista entisestään, jotta aikuiset saataisiin pois alaikäisten vokeista.

Dental checks on child migrants show more than half were adults

Over half of more than 100 asylum seekers claiming to be unaccompanied minors who have been tested, were found to be adults after dental checks were carried out, it emerged on Friday.

A special team has been set up at the state dental services tasked with identifying a person’s age with X-rays, the health ministry announced.

The dental services have been, since 2015, cooperating with state services as to the identification of the age of applicants for asylum who claim they are minors.

[...]

The project is co-funded, 90 per cent by the Asylum, Immigration and Integration Fund of the EU and 10 per cent by the Republic of Cyprus.

According to data from the interior ministry, 56 per cent of 105 people claiming to be minors were found to be adults after their details were checked. In total, 176 people filed as unaccompanied minors last year.

The interior ministry had said last month that a new, speedy procedure was to be introduced by the government for verifying the age of people claiming to be unaccompanied minors.

The government stepped up measures concerning this matter, as many asylum seekers who have claimed to be unaccompanied minors, are hosted in shelters for children until their age is verified.

This, the ministry said, interrupts the smooth operation of these facilities, especially on issues concerning the safety of unaccompanied children hosted there.

Alueelle on tullut viime aikoina runsaasti matuja Turkin puolelta.

Two injured in brawl in northern Greece migrant camp

Two men were in hospital on Tuesday after being injured in a brawl at a state-run migrant center in northern Greece.

Doctors at Thessaloniki's Ippokratio Hospital said that the two men, identified only as Iraqi and Iranian nationals, had been stabbed with a sharp implement but their condition was not considered serious.

The brawl erupted at around 11.30 on Monday night at the camp in the former Anagnostopoulos military base in the area of Diavata, where the population has swelled in recent months due to a spike in arrivals across Greece's land border with Turkey.

Fights are not uncommon at Greece's migrant and refugee camps, where population numbers tend to be far above their initial capacity and resources are limited.

Joukkio on varmaankin jo viety vastaanottokeskukseen.

According to Kathimerini Cyprus, 47 refugees including a pregnant woman and one teenager, reached Cypriot shores in the north-western part of the island by boat, after starting the last leg of their trip from the Turkish coast.

Coast Guard officials rushed to the area while the vessel that transported them had already turned back and disappeared.

Police, coast guard break large migrant trafficking ring

The Greek Police and the coast guard have broken a criminal racket believed to have been smuggling undocumented migrants from the northern region of Evros to Attica and then onwards to Italy, it emerged on Monday.

According to sources, the ring would smuggle the migrants into Greece via the Turkish land border before transporting them down to Laconia in the Peloponnese where they would be put on boats to Italy.

Three suspected racket members were detained while the alleged ring leader is reportedly a Syrian national who has secured asylum in Greece and has been charged with migrant trafficking in the past.

The victims were two men and two women aged 30-35, coroner Nikos Kifnidis told The Associated Press. He said they were lying down when the train hit and dismembered them, dragging their bodies for about 200 meters (yards).

Blankets were found by the lines at the point of impact, suggesting that the migrants had wrapped up for sleep.

Refugees to be moved to mainland Greece for the winter period

Refugees hosted in camps, especially on the islands, are faced with the wave of bad weather affecting Greece.
Serious problems have arisen in the reception and identification center in Moria, Lesbos where 5,800 refugees live, according to the latest official record.

Despite the fact that there was some decongestion at the camp in recent months (over 10.000 refugees stayed at the camp in September whose capacity is for 3.100) the conditions caused by heavy rainfall and low temperatures are in many cases adverse.

Agreement to accommodate 5,000 refugees in hotels

The state's goal is to further decongest the structures on the islands. However, at the moment, the priority is to ensure safe conditions for refugees during the winter period, with humanitarian organizations sounding alarms.

In this context, the Ministry for Immigration announced the implementation of a program that provides accommodation to 5.000 refugees for six months in mainland Greece hotels. The implementation of this project, which will be funded by DG Home, concerns refugees currently on islands and those in northern Greece structures where appropriate housing conditions are not ensured.

Cyprus authorities say 65 migrants reach island

Cyprus police say 65 people – including 24 children and 18 women – believed to be Syrian migrants are receiving medical check-ups after arriving aboard a boat spotted southeast of the east Mediterranean island nation.

Police said their vessel is believed to have set sail from Lebanon and was escorted by patrol boats into a harbor along Cyprus' eastern coast Thursday.

The boat's arrival coincided with an appeal for help with coping with migrants that Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades issued to other European Union leaders during a summit in Austria on Thursday.

Anastasiades said EU leaders showed understanding and that he expects "tangible" assistance.

Anastasiades earlier told leaders that Cyprus with a population of just over a million has reached its limits in absorbing more migrants amid a surge in asylum applications

Kyproksella on tällä hetkellä melkoisesti haasteita mereltä tulevien matujen kanssa ja lisäksi näitä tulee myös Turkin hallitseman saaren pohjoisosan kautta (varmaan jopa enemmän?).

Turvapaikanhakijoiden määrän odotetaan ylittävän 8 000:n rajan tänä vuonna (vuonna 2016 määrä oli 3 000).

Cyprus sees surge in migrants crossing from breakaway north

On the final leg of his journey from Iraq to Europe, Hawye Rasool Saleh paid 400 euros ($457) borrowed from his best friend to a smuggler who would help him across the cease-fire line of ethnically split Cyprus.

The transaction was sealed in anonymity.

"You don't know me, I don't know you," the 32-year-old Saleh said he was told by the trafficker before he climbed into a van on the Turkish Cypriot side.

The crossing was easy, Saleh said. Two soldiers manning a guard post on the Turkish Cypriot side checked the driver's ID, then waved the van through to the buffer zone that divides the breakaway northern part of the Mediterranean island from the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus, a European Union member.

Saleh, who said he fled religious fundamentalism in Iraq, is one of the thousands of migrants who have slipped into Cyprus this year across its porous 180-kilometer-long (120-mile-long) buffer zone. Migrant arrivals by sea have also increased, turning tiny Cyprus into the EU's top recipient of asylum-seekers relative to its population size, as other EU countries have tightened their borders.

Government statistics show that about 5,000 people — mostly from Syria but also Somalia, Pakistan, India, Iraq, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Cameroon — had claimed asylum in Cyprus by the end of August. That's expected to reach 8,000 by year's end, up from 3,000 in 2016. While that's a fraction of the hundreds of thousands seeking asylum in the EU, it's putting pressure on a country with just over 1 million people.

"We're trying to cope, but for a long time, now, we have exceeded our fair share," Cypriot Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides told The Associated Press.

The accident happened on the Kipos-Igoumenitsa section of the Egnatia highway, state-run news agency ANA-MPA reported.

Police sources said a truck had overturned in the same area three hours before the accident and traffic police were signalling drivers to follow a detour.

The driver of the car carrying the migrants did not abide by the instruction and tried to bypass the truck.

Firefighters pulled out the three victims, while three more passengers were injured and transferred to hospital. Another three people in the car were not injured.

Solidarity Convoy Let’s Bring Them Here – Netherlands-Greece 2018

History

Let’s Bring Them Here (LBTH) has challenged the Netherlands over and over again for their Relocation promises (EU decision 2015 (1601 and 1523). November 2016 more than 250 cars drove to their Parliamant in The Hague announcing that they wanted to help to ‘Bring Them Here’. Next followed a lawsuit against the government, a ride to Brussels with people out of other countries. LBTH worked closely together with Amnesty International, Pax, Ecre, Oxfam and other NGO’s. Another lawsuit and another year have passed, with hardly any results. Circumstances deteriorate quickly in the camps in Greece. Now LBTH, Amnesty and other NGO’s are convinced that we shouldn’t discuss migration when it comes to the camps in Greece. It’s a man made humanitarian disaster and European countries have to start ‘evacuating’ refugees.

Winter 2018

Children who want to commit suicide, increasing sexual and physical violence and no prospect of a better life. In the refugee camps on the Greek islands, the lives of more than 16,000 people are being destroyed. A humanitarian disaster is ongoing. European countries can no longer point to each other for a solution: something has to be done now. We call on the Dutch government to take the lead in Europe and, in imitation of Portugal, to bring 1,000 people from the Greek islands here in a bilateral agreement. A petition (dutch) has been created for this.

Let’s Bring Them Here

To show how urgent it is, 100 drivers will get in their cars for Christmas. They will drive 3000 kilometers from Amsterdam to Athens, in winter-conditions, to evacuate refugees. They’ve announced to the Greek government that they are coming with the intent to bring 150 refugees home. We need a bilateral agreement, like Portugal for at least a 1000 refugees. On Christmas Eve the convoy will reach Athens, celebrating this feast of light in darkness with refugees, locals and volunteers. On the 25th of December, an open air conference will be held: ‘How to proceed on our own if governments refuse to act’. A bus will drive with the convoy.

The 44 had crossed the Greek-Turkish border in small groups and were picked up by the Romanians inside Greece. The migrants had paid 1,700 euros ($1,940) each.

In an unrelated case, Thessaloniki police arrested Monday night 3 Pakistanis who were holding 2 Bangladeshis hostage in an apartment, demanding money from their relatives back in Bangladesh and threatening violence.

ANKARA

A total of 149 irregular migrants were held across Turkey, security sources said on Tuesday.

In central Sivas province, eight Afghan migrants were held in a bus, said a source, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

The migrants didn't have identity cards and residence permits for staying in Turkey.

A legal action was taken against the bus driver.

Separately, the Turkish Coast Guard rounded up 62 irregular migrants, including women and children, in a boat off Sigacik gulf of Aegean province of Izmir.

The migrants included 24 from Central African Republic, 15 from Congo, 10 from Mali, three from Palestine, two each from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Togo, Senegal and Yemen.

Another 30 irregular migrants -- 22 Afghan and eight Pakistani nationals -- were held in three vehicles in northeastern Artvin province during a highway patrol conducted by gendarme forces.

Four people were also arrested for suspected human trafficking.

26 irregular migrants held across Turkey

ANKARA

A total of 26 irregular migrants were held across Turkey, security sources said on Wednesday.

In the northwestern province of Kirklareli, gendarmerie forces received a tip-off that two groups of migrants were preparing to illegally cross to Bulgaria, said a security source who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

At least 19 Afghan nationals were caught in Karamesutlu village and near the Derekoy border gate.

Also in southern Gaziantep province, security forces stopped a vehicle carrying seven Syrians, who had illegally arrived in Turkey.

All the migrants held were sent to regional immigration departments.

Turkey has been the main route for refugees trying to cross into Europe, especially since the beginning of the civil war in Syria.

Alankomaalaiset maahanmuuttoaktivistit ovat pettyneet Balkanin reitin sulkemiseen ja järjestivät tempauksen, jossa ajavat Kreikkaan 100 auton saattueella ja vievät 150 "hädänalaista" Alankomaihin paremman elintason piiriin. He perustelevat toimiaan Kreikan vokkien ylikuormittumisella, huonoilla oloilla ja niissä tapahtuvalla väkivalta- ja seksuaalirikollisuudella. Mikseivät he siinä tapauksessa vie "hädänalaisia" Turkkiin?

Tempauksen järjestäjänä toimii "Let's Bring them Here" -niminen järjestö.

Action Group Let's Bring them Here returns from Greece without refugees

Let's Bring them Here arrived on Christmas Eve in Athens and asked Prime Minister Tsipras of Greece to provide 150 refugees who are stuck in the camps on the Greek islands with travel documents. The plan was to bring the migrants to the Netherlands in one of the thirty cars used or in the extra long bus that was specially purchased by the action group. That bus left it in Germany, after which the action group drove fifty cars to Athens.

We did not manage to enter into a dialogue with the Greek government, says organizer Rikko Voorberg against the NOS Radio 1 Journaal. "It remains dead silent on the part of the Greek government. They do not seem to want to respond, "says Voorberg. ,, We have always said that we were hoping for a miracle. That did not happen. What has happened is that the subject of relocation of refugees has been at the top of the political agenda for the first time in a long time. "

[...]

However, Voorberg does not feel that he has raised false hopes with the action among the refugees. "It is a prison here and there must be people who rattle at the bars and say that this is unjust. People hoped for humanity and a fair trial. That has not happened in any way. If someone has raised false hopes here, that is the European Union. "

CYPRUS: Police pick up 19 migrants dropped off near Akamas

Cypriot authorities on Tuesday picked up 19 migrants on the island’s northwest tip after being dropped off by suspect people smugglers, the Cyprus News Agency reported.

It is believed the migrants arrived by boat – in the Akamas region – on Monday night before being spotted by police at around 7.30am local time on Tuesday (Christmas Day), CNA reported.

It said after the migrants were dropped off on the rugged coast, the suspect traffickers got away on a speed boat which Cypriot marine police pursued and tried to intercept.

The origin of the irregular migrants – 14 men, two women and three children - is yet unknown as is their point of departure for Cyprus.

They will be taken to a reception centre in the capital Nicosia.

Over the past 12 months there has been a steady trickle of Syrian migrants arriving in Cyprus from Turkey and Lebanon.

Cyprus has warned Brussels it is struggling to cope from increased irregular migration flows recently ranking it top in first-time asylum claims in relation to its population.

It estimates that the influx of irregular migrants has exceeded 1,000 per month.

During the first 8 months of 2018, applications for international protection status were up by 55 per cent compared to the same period in 2017.

Thousands of asylum-seekers moved off Greek islands

As winter bites, UNHCR helps the Greek government move vulnerable asylum-seekers from reception centres on the Aegean Islands to shelter on the mainland.

Under a light drizzle, families from various war-torn countries stack duffel bags and battered cases holding all their possessions at the entrance to the Moria Reception and Identification Centre (RIC) on the Greek island of Lesvos.

More than 200 asylum-seekers are waiting to be transferred by boat to accommodation on the mainland. They barely notice the rain because they are so happy to be finally leaving the overcrowded reception centre, where they have lived since crossing the Aegean Sea from Turkey months before.

Their destination is a former resort beside northern Greece’s Lake Volvi. The site, last inhabited by Yazidis from Iraq, has been reopened by the government to ease the pressure on the islands and provide people with suitable accommodation and conditions while their asylum applications are processed.

“I hope and pray that the situation at Volvi will be better,” says Mohammed Al Ahmad, 33, from Syria’s volatile Idlib province, as he helps his four young children, pregnant wife and elderly mother onto a bus hired by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, to take them to the ferry in Mytilene, the main port city of Lesvos. They spent three months in Moria.

With the approach of winter, UNHCR has helped the Greek government move thousands of vulnerable asylum-seekers from Moria and other RICs on the Greek Aegean Islands to better shelter. More than 11,000 people have moved since early September from the islands to reception sites, hotels, and apartments on the mainland. UNHCR, with funding from the European Commission, assists in the transfers by bussing people to and from sea ports and organizing ferry tickets.

Lesvos and Samos have been given priority for the decongestion operation over other islands as the RICs of Moria and Vathy are in desperate straits. More than half of all transfers have taken place from Moria. In December alone, over 1,700 asylum-seekers have been transferred from Lesvos with UNHCR’s support, after they were authorized to move by the Greek government.

Since transfers accelerated, Moria’s population has fallen below 5,000 for the first time since April 2018, but is still twice its capacity. The authorities have increased their efforts to improve conditions for those still waiting.

Specifically, a Frontex patrol boat found a sunk rubber boat carrying 26 people in the marine area of the Lesvos airport.

The Frontex crew picked up the boat’s passengers who were transported to Mytilini port, while the 35-year-old foreign national captain was arrested.

Later on Sunday, the Hellenic Coast Guard found an inflatable motorboat southeast of Farmakonisi island.

The coast guard boat crew collected 43 people on board the inflatable and transported them to the Farmakonisi port.

The migrants are from South Africa, Senegal, Congo, Palestine, and Mali, the sources said.

Among the migrants, a pregnant woman and her child were hospitalized, the sources added.

Oxfam report details inhumane conditions at Greek migrant camps

Hours after a 24-year-old man from Cameroon was found dead at Moria camp on the Aegean island of Lesvos, international relief group Oxfam published a scathing report detailing inhumane conditions at the infamous facility and other sites.

The report, titled “Vulnerable and Abandoned,” details how the system to identify and protect the most vulnerable individuals has broken down due to chronic understaffing and flawed processes.

Following the resignation of the government-appointed doctor at Moria who was tasked with screening as many as 2,000 people arriving each month, medical assessments to identify the most vulnerable people at the overcrowded camp stopped for at least a month, Oxfam said.

Because of this, the report says, “vulnerable people including survivors of torture and sexual violence are being housed in unsafe areas… Pregnant women and mothers with newborns are left sleeping in tents, and unaccompanied children, wrongly registered as adults, have been placed in detention.”

The report includes accounts of mothers being sent away from hospital to live in a tent as early as four days after giving birth by Caesarean section.

Furthermore, it says that victims of sexual violence and other traumas are housed in a camp where fights are a daily occurrence and where two thirds of residents say they never feel safe.

“In a few extreme cases, women say they have resorted to wearing diapers at night to avoid having to go to the toilet after dark,” the report said.

(...)

Some migrant camps on mainland Greece – such as Malakasa, in eastern Attica, and Grevena, in the north – have also had problems due to snowfall in recent days.

ATHENS (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday a deal between the European Union and Turkey to stem massive migrant flows is dysfunctional and criticized Greece’s legal system for underperforming on deportations.

The EU and Turkey struck an accord in 2016 after more than a million refugees and migrants arrived from the Middle East and Africa to Greece’s shores the year before.

Under the agreement, anyone crossing to Greece from Turkey who does not qualify for asylum must be sent back and for every Syrian refugee being returned to Turkey from the Greek islands, another will be resettled to the EU.

“Unfortunately it’s not working properly,” Merkel said in response to questions from students at the German School of Athens. “As it is not working, we have this pressurized situation on the Greek islands.”

Management of the refugee crisis has bruised unity in the 28-nation bloc: Mediterranean countries coping with most arrivals often feel helpless while wealthier northern nations complain people reach their soil unchecked and those on the EU’s eastern flank refuse to host new arrivals.

Merkel concluded a two-day visit to Athens where she also met with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

“The Greek legal system is very complicated and somehow the sending back (of migrants) is not working,” she told the students.

Greece Records Threefold Rise in Migrant Arrivals Over Land

The Greek Minister of Migration, Dimitris Vitsas, revealed on Friday that the influx of migrants over the land border with Turkey increased by almost 300 percent in 2018 compared to the previous year.

There was an increase of 10 percent in migration to the Aegean islands during the same period.

Vitsas said that a total of 47,929 migrants arrived in Greece in 2018 compared to 34,707 in 2017. Of that number, 32,155 individuals landed on the islands, while 15,814 went across the Evros River along the land border with Turkey.

Though the Evros frontier is heavily guarded, it is still an easier way to get into Greece than taking a boat to an island in the Mediterranean or Aegean.

Islands such as Lesvos, Samos, and Chios have essentially become dead-ends for migration, where thousands of asylum seekers and migrants remain stuck in squalid camps.

Irakilainen maahantunkeutuja on lähtenyt perheineen Turkista Kreikkaan merikelvottomalla aluksella ja hänen 9-vuotias tyttärensä on sen seurauksena kuollut. Tämä on tietenkin (tällä kertaa työnsä tehneiden) kreikkalaisten viranomaisten syytä.

Lisäksi Turkissa on 4 henkilöä jäätynyt kuoliaaksi Kreikan rajan lähellä ja tämäkin on tapahtunut kreikkalaisten viranomaisten vuoksi.

Greek coast guard 'tried to kill us,' father of drowned migrant girl says

A nine-year-old girl was the victim of a sinking dinghy carrying illegal migrants from Turkey to Greece early Tuesday; her father blamed the death on the ‘inhumane’ treatment by Greek officials who abandoned them at sea to die

An Iraqi irregular migrant who was rescued by the Turkish coast guard along with 45 others in the Aegean Sea on Tuesday said Greek naval officers "tried to kill" them.

Greece has been facing accusations that it forcefully sends back illegal migrants to Turkey in a controversial practice known as "pushback." This time, the Aegean Sea that divides Turkey and Greece was the scene of such a pushback.

Coast guard teams saved the migrants off Kuşadası district of southwestern Aydın province after a semi-submerged boat carrying the migrants including children started taking in water.

Muhammad Fadel, father of nine-year-old Zainab, whose body was recovered by the Turkish Coast Guard, told reporters that Greek marines approached them while he and 45 other Iraqi migrants were heading to the Greek island of Samos from Kuşadası in western Turkey.

"There were strong waves. We thought they came to save us. They told us to cut the engine. They tied our boat to theirs with a rope, and then they start to turn us in circles," Fadel told reporters as he was wrapped up in a blanket at a hospital in Kuşadası.

"It was so inhumane. They tried to kill us," he added.

Four migrants were found frozen to death on the Turkish side of the border in the first week of December and eyewitnesses claimed they were victims of forcible return to Turkey by Greece. The Greek Coast Guard, or at least people disguised as Coast Guard officers were accused of forcing illegal migrants to the Turkish side in the past.
